Google’s Compute Engine now offers machines with up to 64 CPU cores, 416GB of RAM

Google is doubling the maximum number of CPU cores developers can use with a single virtual machine on its  Compute Engine  service from 32 to 64. These high-power machines are now available in beta across all of Google’s standard configurations and as custom machine types, which allow you to select exactly how many cores and memory you want. If you opt to use 64 cores in Google’s range of high-memory machine types, you’ll also get access to 416GB of RAM. That’s also twice as much memory as Compute Engine previously offered for a single machine and enough for running most memory-intensive applications, including high-end in-memory databases. Running your apps on this high-memory machine will set you back $3.7888 per hour (though you do get all of Google’s usual sustained-use discounts if you run it for longer, too). “We’re not stopping here,” Google’s Urs Hoelzle said during today’s  Cloud Next keynote . “So later this year, y...

Burger-flipping robot replaces humans on first day at work

Image
A burger-flipping robot has just completed its first day on the job at a restaurant in California, replacing humans at the grill. Flippy has mastered the art of cooking the perfect burger and has just started work at CaliBurger, a fast-food chain. The robotic kitchen assistant, which its makers say can be installed in just five minutes, is the brainchild of Miso Robotics. “Much like self-driving vehicles, our system continuously learns from its experiences to improve over time,” said David Zito, chief executive officer of Miso Robotics.

Chance the Rapper continued his fight for Chicago Public Schools by donating $1 million to the district that helped raise him. Speaking at a press conference at Oliver S. Westcott Elementary in Chicago on Monday (March 6), the Grammy-winning MC announced the news. “Today, I am proud to announce that I am donating $1 million to CPS,” he said. “This donation was made possible by my fans, through ticket sales for my upcoming tour and an unprecedented coordination from Live Nation, AEG, and Ticketmaster, competing corporations who were able to band together — also with independent promoters and venues across the country — to use funds from ticket sales to donate to CPS…I’m honored to make this donation to Chicago Public Schools Foundation and help cultivate Chicago creative minds.” The aid doesn’t stop there. In addition to the million-dollar donation, Chance said that his foundation, Social Works, will donate $10,000 to a specific public school for every $100,000 that’s raised,...

DJ Khaled Teases Drake Collaboration for ‘Grateful’

It looks like DJ Khaled and Drake have another top secret collaboration on the way. After repeatedly asking whether the Drake vocals came in yet, the super-producer teased the potential track off his forthcoming album Grateful on social media. “The vocals that we’ve been waiting for, they came in,” he told his son Asahd. “Yeah, but it’s top secret so we can’t let nobody know. Okay?” The video’s caption on Instagram tagged Drake, making it clear who those vocals are from. As Grateful‘s executive producer, the five-month-old Asahd has been busy in the lab with his father. “Asahd, I need you to approve my vocals I just added, too. Okay?” said the proud dad. “I want to thank you for doing a great job on this Grateful album. You’re doing a great job as the executive producer. You’re doing great. Super great.” Last night, Asahd also became an official award show presenter when he helped his dad introduce Ed Sheeran’s iHeartRadio Music Awards performance. If the Khaled and Drake col...

Chance the Rapper Frustrated After Meeting with Illinois Governor

Chance the Rapper had a private 40-minute meeting with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner about the state of Chicago’s Public Schools, but the Grammy-winning MC didn’t seem too pleased with the outcome. “I’m here ’cause I just want people to do their jobs,” Chance told reporters after the meeting. “I did speak with the governor. I asked him about funding CPS with that $215 million that was discussed in May of last year and was vetoed in December over, you know, political arguments and shit. “The kids are on the table right now,” he added. “We spoke for a second. It sounded like we were going somewhere, but it’s hinged on passing other bills. I’m not a politician…” He also reportedly told the governor: “Take our kids off the table.” During his impromptu post-meeting press conference, Chance also appeared disappointed with Rauner’s inability to provide specifics. “He gave me a lot of vague answers so we’ll see what happens,” he added. “He has my personal number.” After the meeting,...

A$AP Rocky Remembers His Late Brother in Mercedes-Benz Commercial

A$AP Rocky stars in a touching, tragic, and triumphant ad for Mercedes-Benz’s “Grow Up” campaign. In the cinematic commercial, the Harlem rapper reflects on his older brother Ricky, who was murdered when Flacko was just a kid. “Growing up, I had this beat stuck in my head,” he says, as sleek visuals depicting his childhood flash on screen. “No matter what, I could never really get it out. I guess when you young, you could be anything you want to choose, but as you get older, all of those options start to narrow and before you know it, every choice you make comes with a consequence. Whenever shit got rough, this beat was always there. But one day, man, the beat just stopped. “My brother moved on, but the beat came back, pulsing through every vein in my body,” he added. “My older brother Ricky is responsible for me growing up and having a real job.” The ad shows Ricky encouraging his younger brother to pursue his dream. “Come on, Rocky,” he whispers. “Just go for it. Just rap.” T...
