Big Brothe Naija: Miyonse, Soma and Efe Up for Eviction this week

Image
After a week of excitement and a mock eviction which shook the housemates and brought some of them to tears, Big Brother Naija will witness it's first real eviction come Sunday, February 5. The housemate with the least number of votes will be evicted from the house. Last night, the first live nomination happened on the show. The housemates were each given 45 seconds to nominate two fellow housemates for eviction and Miyonse, Soma and Gifty got the most nominations from other housemates. The head of house, CoCoIce was called to save one of the nominated housemates and replace with another. CoCoIce saved Gifty and replaced her with Efe.

Drake, Kanye West and Justin Bieber won't attend the Grammys

Some of music’s biggest stars will be missing from Music’s Biggest Night. Drake, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, and Frank Ocean are reportedly skipping the Grammys this year. Ocean, who released  Blonde  and  Endless  last year, failed to submit either for consideration by the award show. He’s since bashed it,  saying  “it just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.” He also called it “dated.” “I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys,” he added, “than sit there in the audience.” Kanye West has eight  nominations  and has earned 21 Grammys throughout his career, but he’s also  boycotting  the event. In October, he said, “If [Frank’s] album’s not nominated in no categories, I’m not showin’ up to the Grammys.” Despite his own eight nods, Drake won’t be attending this year’s ceremony as he will be overseas on his “Boy Meets World Tour.” His fellow nominee Justin Bieber, who is up for A

Pig-human hybrid brings us closer to barnyard organ factories

Image
Scientists have successfully created  pig embryos that contain a small fraction of human cells , according to a study published Thursday in  Cell. The study, led by researchers at the Salk Institute in California, represents a significant step toward human-animal hybrids that could one day grow whole new human organs for transplant. Right now, the pig hybrids only contain about one human cell to 100,000 pig cells and were very tricky to make. And due to ethical guidelines, the researchers only let them develop for about a month. But researchers are optimistic that they’ll be able to tackle the technical—and ethical—challenges moving forward. They certainly have a lot of hints that they’ll be successful. To show that cells from two different species can share one body in harmony, the researchers also created mice with rat organs. They used a snazzy new genetic engineering tool called  CRISPR/Cas9  to break a few genes in mouse embryos that dashed their ability to develop several

World’s first solar road opens in France: It’s ridiculously expensive

Image
The world's first solar highway has been opened in France, in the not-very-sunny village of Tourouvre au Perche in Normandy. The roadway is just one kilometre (0.6mi) long, but that still works out at 2,800 square metres of photovoltaic cells—enough, hopefully, to power the village's street lights. The road was built by Colas, a large Anglo-French construction company. Colas has apparently been working on its own solar road tech, called Wattway, for at least five years. Wattway has been tested in car parks, but this is the first time it has been used on an active road. There will now be a two-year test period, to see if Wattway can withstand the rigour of being pounded by thousands of cars and trucks per day, and whether it can actually provide a useful amount of electricity. Usefulness aside, the main problem with constructing solar roads is their crippling cost. One of the main selling points of Wattway, according to Colas, is that each panel is just a few millimetre

Apple reportedly removing apps from Iranian developers & startups from the iOS App Store

Apple has allegedly started removing apps originating in Iran from the App Store. According to  Techrasa , Apple removed the app of Digikala, the biggest Iranian e-commerce service, a few days ago. Apple has yet to comment on the procedure but it seems to stem from international trade laws (via TechCrunch). Apple started opening up the App Store to users in Iran in September of 2016, gradually lifting limitations that had previously been in place. While there is still no official App Store in the country, developers in Iran often register their apps as being from other countries to get around that limitation. The aforementioned e-commerce app Digikala uses the Shaparak payment system, which is isolated from international systems and thus does not contradict Apple’s terms and conditions for developers. Nevertheless, it has been removed as part of this seemingly new policy. On the other hand, many Iranian banks have iOS apps that are side-loaded onto devices to avoid violating thos

Breath test could be cancer lifesaver

A simple breath test could be the key to achieving earlier diagnosis of two deadly cancers. A trial of more than 300 patients demonstrated the test can identify stomach and oesophageal cancers with 85% accuracy by picking up on levels of acids and chemicals. Both types of cancer are often diagnosed late and have poor survival rates. Scientists hope detecting the cancers earlier will lead to more effective treatment and help save lives. The test is also expected to reduce the need for unpleasant endoscopy examinations that require a flexible telescope to be inserted into the stomach via the throat. Around 6,682 people are diagnosed with stomach cancer in the UK every year, with 4,576 dying from the disease. For oesophageal cancer, around 8,919 people are diagnosed and 7,790 die. For the new study breath samples were collected from 335 patients at three London hospitals. Of these, 163 had been diagnosed with oesophageal or stomach cancer while 172 were shown to be cance

Six teenagers found dead after garden party in Germany

Police are investigating if six teenagers found dead after a garden party in Germany were poisoned by carbon monoxide. The five young men and one young woman were found on Sunday morning by the owner of a garden shed, who wondered why his son and daughter - both among the victims - had not returned from the party. Police in Arnstein, Bavaria, said the victims were all aged 18 or 19. They said in a statement: "It remains unclear what led to the death of the six people, but there were no indications of any violent crime." There was a wood-burning stove in the shed, prompting detectives to investigate the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. Local police spokesman Bjorn Schmitt told the Bild newspaper the group had turned on the stove "so it is a possibility, but there are others". He said post-mortem examinations should provide more information on the cause of the deaths.

Doctors in India remove 6-foot tapeworm through man's mouth

According to a report published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, Doctors in India were stunned to remove a tapeworm measuring more than 6 feet through a patient's mouth. Dr. Cyriac Phillips wrote in an email that the 48-year-old man underwent a colonoscopy in 2014 after complaints of "tolerable" abdominal pain that had gone on for two months and test results indicating low hemoglobin concentrations in his blood. While performing the colonoscopy, Phillips discovered part of the worm. "It was an undulating, moving piece of the worm, " he said. After the initial discovery, doctors performed an endoscopy, a procedure using a camera inserted into the patient's stomach to view the intestines. During the procedure, Phillips and his team were able to see images of the lengthy parasite residing in the small intestine. After sedating the man, a team of physicians at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences Hospital in New Delhi were able to extract

Iran to ban U.S. citizens in retaliation to Trump's Muslim ban

Iran Foreign Ministry on Saturday, January 28, 2017, announced that U.S. citizens will be blocked from entering the country in retaliation to Donald Trump’s ban on travellers from seven majority-Muslim countries coming to the US. 'While respecting the American people and distinguishing between them and the hostile policies of the U.S. government, Iran will implement the principle of reciprocity until the offensive U.S. limitations against Iranian nationals are lifted. 'The restrictions against travel by Muslims to America are an open affront against the Muslim world and the Iranian nation in particular and will be known as a great gift to extremists.' It comes after President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to suspend visas for citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. However, a Federal Judge in New York granted an emergency stay on Saturday night for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries who have already arrived in th

Trump signs executive order to keep out people from Syria, Iran and 5 other countries from entering the US

On Friday January 27, 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that indefinitely suspends admissions for Syrian refugees and limits the flow of other refugees into the United States by instituting "extreme vetting" of immigrants. Titled "Protection Of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States," the executive order would start to make good on Trump's promise to tighten borders and halt certain refugees from entering the United States. According to a White House official, the countries impacted are Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. Usain Bolt's precious 'treble-treble' is no more

When Usain Bolt helped the Jamaican sprint relay team to gold in the Beijing Bird's Nest in 2008 it felt like he was signing off with a joyful exclamation mark at the end of a miraculous new chapter in sporting history. It brought him a third gold medal to go with the 100m and 200m titles (all of them won in world-record times) and emphasised the exuberant brilliance that had encouraged even the most cynical to believe. Sprinting had long been the most rancid of Olympic disciplines, turned sour by decades of doping, but Bolt's speed, his smile and his unblemished past was the sweetest of spectacles. It was a national triumph too for Jamaica, indisputably established as the world leaders in sprinting, with a clean-sweep of the women's 100m medals to go with Bolt's personal haul. Except it wasn't. Eight years on we learned that the man who ran the lead-out leg in the Bird's Nest that night, Nesta Carter, was running with a banned substance in his system.

Three die in Port Harcourt following first rain of the year In Nigeria

Three people were confirmed dead following the first rain of the year which fell on Monday night in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. The rain was reportedly very heavy and was accompanied by thunderstorms, bringing down telecommunication masts and billboards while it lasted. Some of the advertising boards and telecommunication masts landed on homes and properties, destroying them. A three-year-old girl and a sixteen-year-old boy were reportedly among those who died. The boy died instantly when a telecommunication mast fell on him while hawking pure water for his mother at Nkpolu School, Port Harcourt. The mother of the deceased three-year-old girl was inconsolable as she asked the owner of the mast that resulted in the death to revive her daughter. Another victim of the heavy rain, Mr Ifeanyi Uba, who shop together with the goods in it were destroyed by a falling mast, trapping two of his workers, lamented his loss and called on the government to assist him in rebuilding because he could n

Moody and neurotic? It could be down to your brain shape

Moody? Neurotic? The outer layer of your brain is probably thicker and less wrinkled than that of your more personable friends. A team at Cambridge University studied brain imaging from 507 people to try and link the shape of our brains with five key personality traits. The team concluded that the outer layer of the brain - similar to the skin of an apple - is thicker and the brain less folded in neurotic people who are prone to mood changes and psychiatric disorders. Individuals with 'open' personalities linked to curiosity and creativity show the opposite. The outer layer of their brains is thinner and the brain more folded in certain regions, with a greater surface area. Researcher Dr Luca Passamonti says that long-term applications could include early diagnosis of severe anxiety and other psychiatric disorders. He says the research shows evidence of a compromise within the human brain. "Evolution has shaped our brain anatomy in a way that maximises its ar

Paris Jackson: 'My father was murdered'

Michael Jackson's only daughter, Paris, says she believes her father was murdered. In her first in-depth interview , Paris told Rolling Stone she was convinced Jackson's 2009 death was "a setup". The singer died from an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol. His doctor Conrad Murray was later  found guilty  of involuntary manslaughter. But Paris believes there is more to the story. "He would drop hints about people being out to get him," she said. "And at some point he was like, 'They're gonna kill me one day.'" Asked by interviewer Brian Hiatt if she thought her father was murdered, the 18-year-old replied: "Absolutely". "Because it's obvious. All arrows point to that. It sounds like a total conspiracy theory... but all real fans and everybody in the family knows it. It was a setup." She went on to say "a lot of people" wanted her father dead, and that she was playing a "che

2017 UTME: JAMB, NECO, WAEC, NABTEB harmonise Time-table

Ahead of 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has agreed on a harmonized timetable with other examination bodies in the country to have a hitch free examination.   The Board at a brainstorming meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) held at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja unanimously agreed to harmonize the examination timetable because of the candidates desire for qualitative tertiary education. The harmonised examination timetable has put to rest problems arising from overlapping of examination dates, which would have disenfranchised a sizeable number of candidates. At the end of the brainstorming session, the bodies resolved that WAEC would speak to all its authorities that from 2018, between March and April, for a window of two (2) weeks be created where all other examinations that
