Jewel thieves use NYE celebrations as cover for $6m New York City heist
CCTV footage has emerged of the moment burglars used New Year's Eve celebrations as cover while they pulled off a $6m (£4.88m) jewellery heist.
Police said three hooded and masked men broke into a pair of safes at a jewellery wholesaler in New York City, at 12.01am on Sunday.
The heist happened as more than 7,000 officers patrolled celebrations in Times Square, just seven blocks, or less than half a mile, away.
It is believed the thieves climbed a set of fire stairs and snuck into the sixth-floor officers of Gregg Ruth jewellers at 10pm, where they waited until midnight.
Footage shows two men using a hammer and a crowbar to break into the safe room, before one spots the security camera and breaks it.
They stole gold and diamond rings, bracelets and necklaces once inside, police said.
A police source told New York Daily News the safes were already open and the burglars "didn't even have to pry".
Gregg Ruth, on West 36th Street and Sixth Avenue, specialises in imported stones and coloured diamonds.
The most expensive piece of jewellery it sells is an 18 carat white gold necklace worth $204,000 (£166,000).
