THE HEADIES 2016: A TOTAL FLOP!
The much anticipated Headies Award show for this year has come and gone leaving in its trails Nigerians shaking their heads in disappointment and in doubt about the planning of the show and the authenticity of the awards given out.
The event went down at Eko Convention Center, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday, the 21st of December. It was hosted by Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi along with Nigerian artiste, Falz. Even with these awesome celebrities as hosts, the show had many pitfalls.
First, the video coverage was so poor, one could hardly pick out the faces of the guests and celebrities on TV. The sound quality was just as poor. Some Nigerians tweeted that the mic used was probably the same one Olamide threw down on stage in his tussle with Don Jazzy at the previous edition. Who knows? But how can the organizers let that happen in a show that is seen as ‘Nigeria’s Grammy’?
Next, most top celebrities and artistes boycotted the show. The entire members of YBNL and Mavin records were notably absent. Simi(awarded Best Vocal Performance Female), Kiss Daniel and Illbliss failed to claim awards. Tekno was disqualified from the highly coveted “Next Rated” category which Mr Eazi won. Wizkid who won Artiste of the Year was surprisingly present to claim his award.
Kiss Daniel took the most awards home after winning three out of the five awards he was nominated for. They are: Album of the Year, Best R&B/pop album and Hip Hop world revelation. Closely followed was Darey and Ill Bliss taking two awards each. Falz’s Soldier featuring Simi won the Best Collaboration of the Year, to the commendation of everyone.
The reason why this year’s edition was a total flop compared to previous editions was that many deserving artistes were not duly awarded or recognized.
The Headies is fast losing its respect and prestige because of the numerous allegations against it as being unfair, compromised and poorly planned. This was so not what was expected. We can only hope for a better, free and fair show next year.
